Atami - Hatsushima
Atami is a hot spring town that became very popular during the bubble economy years. It has a yacht harbor and a Mediterranean feel. Unfortunately, I felt that in part it is a bit run down. There is small island - Hatsushima - which can be reached by boat from where there is a good view of Hakone - Fuji. Another feature is Kyu Hyuga Bettei a set of houses arranged around a central garden, and which is designated as an important cultural property.
Designed by the German architect Bruno Taut who was living for several years in Japan from 1933. It is interesting mixture of European and Japanese style houses including a Roman bath.
