Back home I researched and found that on January 21, 1964 the cargo ship "Shintoku Maru 2" of 757 tons and belonging to Shintoku Kaiun in Akitsu-cho, Toyota-gun, Hiroshima prefecture (currently Higashi-Hiroshima City) had departed with a load exceeding its capacity. Off the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori prefecture, it sank in a storm. Of the 11 crew members, only the chief officer successfully escaped by lifeboat and survived but suffered frostbite on both hands and feet. The remaining 10 were dead and missing.
