Beautiful Trash

Usually trash is ugly but often it has its own beauty like long time abandonned cars that are slowly rusting away. Not all items on these photos are trash or are seen as such by their owners. Some are even very well preserved but I am including them because normally they would have become trash if not cared for especially.

  • These two children bicycles in front of an abandoned house must have stood here for many years as they are totally rusty and decayed. I observed them many times when going for a coffee in an old shop called Furusato, as my office was nearby. The coffee shop was also a quite antique place and the owner, an old lady lived upstairs. I took this photo on December 26th, 2010. I was always wondering what must have happened to the family that had lived in the place, leaving the children’s bicycles just behind. End of 2015 my office was moved from Tsukishima to another other place in Tokyo. I only came back in September 2019 on a walk through my old neighborhood to find out the whole block had been razed for the construction of a huge tower building. So finally, the evidence of this story has been removed irrevocably and the memory remains only in my head and on this photograph. The coffee shop re-opened a short distance away.

  • This bicycle is decorated with an incredible number of LED lights. Unfortunately I could not yet see it in action in the night.

  • Near Nikko I came to this gasoline station that must have closed down long time ago. The were several old Datsun and when I asked the man removed the plastic cover to reveal this beauty of the past.

  • Even in the most remote and pristine areas of Japan there is always some kind of a trash yard. On he shore of the otherwise beautiful lake Chusenji it comes in the form of retired boats and pedalos. Are they waiting for resurecction?

  • The ulgy duck boats' demise. I really hate these boats in the form of ducks and how they can destroy an otherwise beautiful scenery. Here some of them have met their fate. Yes!

  • Walking back from lunch to my office in Tsukishima I noticed this improvised umbrella hanger. Japan is a trash society and in many places bicycles or even cars can stand just wehre the last trip ended and rot there for a long time. Often the nature claims the place back and plants overgrow the rusty remnants.

  • Beautiful Trash! Both the tow truck and the loaded Mini Mayfair must have been resting here fore a long time. The unforgiving humid and salty air close to cape Sunosaki has reduced them both into hardly recognizable sculptures of rust. No clear winner between British and Japanese steel! HDR developed from one shot with the M3 and the F17-40L lens.

  • 2022 update on the Mini and the tow truck. Both have invetiably collapsed und the weight of the age and the relentless salty air near the sea. Only the truck crane arm is still recognisable as such.

  • Close up on the dash board of the Mini which is really all that is left . Closing in the plastic front panel of the car stereo it looks still quite nice. Auto Reverse Tape Deck for those who still know what Compact Cassettes were.
