People after the tsunami

As a photographer I am very hesitant to take pictures of people that I don’t know. Perhaps that is why I am not very good at it and keep on taking aim at nature and man made objects.

Still I had the opportunity to meet with extraordinary people during my trip to Ishinomaki at the beginning of April 2011.

I want share my impressions of the moments I was allowed to share in life of people in the north east of Japan, shortly after the tsunami.

  • Beyond helping with the preparations for the Tonjiru soup there was little that could be done. I was happy to distribute the heating oil to the people in need. Even during the day it was still  very cold!

  • In some houses the clueing up had begun and I was that my hands could be of some use. These three men were cleaning up a house. All the appliances are damaged beyond repair as is the the car on the right . The heavy soaked tatami mats were very heavy to carry out.
